Utility Imposter Continues to Attempt Scam on United Power Customers in Brighton

Brighton, Colo.—Three more cases of a United Power imposter have been reported by customers in Brighton. In the most recent attempt, the suspect was a white male about 5’8” tall with fuzzy hair who drove away in a full-sized, red colored Suburban with temporary tags.

In each attempt, the man knocks on the customer’s front door and says he is with United Power. The man asks the homeowner for payment of an outstanding bill and threatens to shut off service if it is not paid on the spot. In most reported cases, the customers are Spanish speaking and the scam attempts have occurred between Bromley Lane and Longs Peak Street, west of Main Street in Brighton.

United Power asks members to be extra vigilant whenever they are paying money to a service provider. If you are approached at home for payment of your electric bill, do not give the person any money. Get a detailed description of the person and call United Power at 303-659-0551 or the police.

"United Power employees will never collect money from customers at their homes or businesses," said Troy Whitmore, Director of External Affairs. "If someone comes to your door claiming to be a United Power employee and asks for payment, they are impostors and you should call the police immediately."

United Power customers who are behind on electric bills are sent a notice in the mail and the cooperative will also attempt to reach the customer via a recorded phone message. In all instances, the customer is instructed to call the cooperative directly to initiate a payment.

United Power has been working in conjunction with the Brighton Police Department to stop this imposter. Brighton Police have been surveying the areas where these scam attempts have been occurring and welcome additional information that customers may have. If you have details about this utility imposter, or have given money to anyone at your home claiming to be a United Power employee, the Brighton Police Department asks that you please dial 911 to report the information.
