Citizens are encouraged to join their friends, family and neighbors in taking a stand against crime by organizing neighborhood activities in conjunction with this year's National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 2.
Held on the first Tuesday in August each year, this national event is designed to help curb local crime by bringing neighbors together in preventing crime in their neighborhoods. Now in its 28th year, about 2.5 million people participate in National Night Out activities that span more than 400 communities in 23 states.
Commerce City has taken part in the event since 2008, with participation growing each year. In 2008, three local communities participated while last year there were 15 National Night Out locations locally. This year there are already 20 neighborhoods that plan to participate, including Belle Creek, Reunion, Holly Park and Village Crest neighborhoods.
Any neighborhoods interested in organizing an event for the evening of Aug. 2 should contact Officer Kayla Fender at 303-727-3925 or kfender@c3gov.com. The first 25 groups to register their event with the Commerce City Police Department receive a $100 gift card to Target, Wal-Mart or King Soopers to use for planning their event. But with 20 groups already registered, these spots are going fast.
Among the activities that some neighborhoods plan are block parties, cookouts and flashlight walks.
