On March 13, 2010, an Adams County deputy was shot multiple times while on foot patrol in the Village at Coronado Apartments, which is located in the 1600 block of Coronado Parkway. The investigation into this incident has been continuing since the shooting.
On March 15, 2010, Sergio Estrada-Gomez, 25, was arrested for investigation of Attempted Murder and First Degree Assault.
The Sheriff’s Office had increased the policing efforts in the 1600 block of Coronado Parkway because of the escalating violent offences, gang activity, and drug trafficking. The shooting of the deputy confirmed the violence in the community had increased and members of the community were in grave danger.
After the March 13, 2010 shooting, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offered to assist the Sheriff’s Office in their investigative efforts. During the investigation, deputies were unable to obtain positive identification or confirm the identities of some of the people they were contacting. ICE offered to assist the Sheriff’s Office in the identification and communication with witnesses and gang members who may have information pertaining to this case.
On April 22, 2010, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and ICE returned to the Village at Coronado Apartments in an effort to identify and interview specific individuals who are believed to have information, about the shooting or are believed to have been involved in the shooting of the deputy. Deputies and ICE then responded to specific buildings within the apartment complex and specific apartments to contact people of interest in this case.
Because of the continuing investigation, an Arrest Warrant was obtained for Elva Caraveo, 19, an associate of Gomez. Caraveo was contacted during this operation and arrested without incident. Caraveo was charged with Accessory to a Crime and is being held in the Adams County Detention Facility on a $10,000.00 bond.
The Sheriff’s Office does not have federal authority to conduct immigration sweeps or arrests. The scope of the contacts was limited to those individuals involved in this investigation.
