Adams City High School lockdown ends

COMMERCE CITY ― Adams City High School students were released at their normally scheduled time after the school was put on a precautionary lockdown earlier in the day.

The school, with just more than 1,700 students inside, was locked down as a safety measure around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after a pistol magazine was found in a classroom.

The Commerce City Police Department was notified, and officers and district staff enacted the lockdown to allow a search of the school.

The search concluded without locating a firearm inside the school.

Students were let out around 2:30 p.m. and classes will resume its regular schedule on Thursday.

During the search, students remained in their classrooms, and members of the public were not allowed access to the school.

Due to the large area that needed to be searched, and to ensure the safety of all students and staff, partners from throughout Adams County contributed to the search, including Adams County Sheriff’s Department, Brighton Police Department, Colorado State Patrol and Commerce City Neighborhood Services. Commerce City Police Department was the lead law enforcement agency. Kroenke Sports Enterprises/Dick’s Sporting Goods Park also assisted by loaning 15 hand scanners to facilitate the search for the gun.
