At approximately 1:02 p.m. today, Brighton police officers responded to a call for emergency cover at Prairie View High School (PVHS).A Brighton officer was in contact with an adult male, later identified as 20-year-old Andrew Cordova; Cordova was being contacted because police had received information that he was there to assault a student who had allegedly been harassing his sister.
In the course of the contact, a pat-down search of Cordova revealed he was in possession of a knife, which was then removed from his pocket; as the officer began to take Cordova into custody, Cordova resisted the officer’s attempts to bring him under verbal and physical control; the officer requested assistance from other officers, and several Brighton police units responded to the school; PVHS was placed on lock-down status at approximately 1:10 p.m.
Cordova was taken into custody after a minor scuffle, and is being charged with Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon on School Grounds, Interference with Students of an Educational Institution, and Resisting Arrest. Following Cordova’s arrest, the lock-down of the school was lifted at about 1:28 p.m.
