James Mejia, candidate for Mayor of Denver, issued the following statement supporting Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman’s recommendation that Officer Devon Sparks be fired over the beating of Michael DeHerrera on April 4, 2009. After a hearing yesterday on the incident, Chief Whitman changed his recommendation from last year of suspension, to termination.
“I fully support the recommendation of Chief Whitman to terminate Officer Spark’s employment by the Denver Police Department. The actions of April 4, 2009 cannot be tolerated. It is unacceptable that it has taken nearly two years for this recommendation to be made but this action was necessary,” Mejia said. “When a civilian is accused of a crime it takes months, not years for the decision to be made on whether to prosecute or dismiss the charges. We should expect the same when it comes to our public safety officers. Nonetheless, I commend Chief Whitman on his decision. It demonstrates this type of behavior will not be tolerated and when officers act outside the law they will be held accountable”.
Mejia added that yesterday’s recommendation would begin to rebuild the public’s trust and confidence in the Denver Police Department and their leadership ability to police their own.
“This is a step in the right direction when dealing with discipline issues,” Mejia concluded.
