Volunteer victim advocates needed; training begins in March

The Brighton Police Department Victim Assistance Program is seeking dependable, caring individuals to become volunteer victim advocates. Advocates change the lives of others in the community who have been impacted by crime, violence and sudden trauma.

The next training will be held from 6:15 to 9:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 24 through April 26, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, April 9 and 16. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 16. Interested participants must complete the entire 40 hour training. All classes will be held at the Thornton Police Department, 9551 Civic Center Drive.

Victim Advocates provide on-scene contact with victims and witnesses of violent crime, sudden death, and other emergency situations. No previous experience is necessary. Volunteers are required to undergo a thorough background screening including a criminal history check and complete 40 hours of training taught by professionals in the victim services field.

Advocates are required to work four, 12-hour, on-call shifts each month, including weekends and occasional holidays. Advocates must be able to respond within 30 minutes of a dispatch’s notification, and must be available by phone. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, self motivated, have strong interpersonal skills, be able to maintain confidentiality, and commit to at least one year of volunteering.
