Commerce City: Highway Closed After Serious Crash

COMMERCE CITY ― Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, officers from the Commerce City Police Department responded to an injury accident in the 7500 block of State Highway 2. They found three vehicles involved in the crash, one of which was on fire.

The investigation revealed an older Volvo sedan was southbound on Highway 2 when it collided with a van that was also traveling southbound. The impact caused the van to roll off the highway and it caught fire. The driver was able to escape the vehicle and sustained injuries from the fire. The sedan also struck a northbound pickup truck.

The 23 year old driver of the Volvo sedan and his passenger were transported to the hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol and speed are suspected factors in this crash. The investigation is ongoing and criminal charges will be determined at a later time.

The highway was shut down for approximately six hours while the incident was investigated. It was reopened at 5:30 a.m.
