17th Judicial District Attorney Don Quick announced that William Allen Maldonado (DOB: 03/29/1981) was sentenced on January 13, 2011 for three counts of Sexual Assault Using a Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury (F2).
During a two week jury trial, evidence was presented by Deputy District Attorney Brian Mason of the brutal sex assaults of three women, two from Thornton (in July 2000 and June 2002) and one from Federal Heights (in March 2004). All three cases involved home invasions, use of a weapon and violence. In one instance, the victim’s five year old son was forced to watch the assault.
Sex assault examinations were completed and DNA was collected from each of the victims. DNA profiles were established and found to correspond to a common suspect. No suspect leads were successful through investigation and in all the cases, the suspect remained at large.
In July 2009, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation received notification that a match on the DNA profile of the three cases was located and was identified as Maldonado.
DA Quick states “This case exemplifies the value of DNA in solving cold cases. It is a shame, however, that these three courageous women had to wait so long for justice.”
Maldonado was found guilty by an Adams County jury for three counts of sexual assault on November 1, 2009. Maldonado was sentenced by Adams County District Court Judge F. Michael Goodbee to 48 years to life for each count, to run consecutively.
